Durham Heritage Coast Education Pack
The pack, for Key Stages 1 and 2, was developed in consultation with local primary school teachers. Its aim is to equip teachers with background information for the main topic areas relating to the Heritage Coast and to provide structured activity programmes with clear learning outcomes related to the National Curriculum.
The pack is split into three sections: section one contains topic by topic background information for teachers; section two contains topic by topic activity programmes for both key stages separately; section three contains resources including image files, worksheets, pictorial keys etc
Before publication the pack was piloted with schools to verify and fine tune its content.

Earth Magic - a programme of adventurous environmental discovery
The children (Years 3 & 4) are introduced to the magic word WASSAP. This is the magic word that makes earth magic work; the magic of life on Earth. Gradually, through a series of discovery based activities, it is revealed that the letters of the magic word are the initials for the essentials for life itself; Water, Air, Soil, Sun combine to support Animal and Plant life on Earth. They then discover, step by step, how the magic works through the cycles of water, soil and air and the flow of energy from the sun.
Once they have learned the magic the children apply it by creating their own ideal planet. However, everything is not well. People are interfering with the magic and it isnt working as well as it used to. What can they do about it? They dip into the WASSAP rescue bag and get a task to do at home/school that will help. A quiet magic spot follows for reflection in a peaceful natural setting
Greenstart training programme
Greenstart is a central government initiative linked to Surestart, piloted in the northeast of England. The aim of Greenstart is to promote social participation and active use of the natural environment by parents and pre-school children; improved health and general well-being are key targeted outcomes.
Countryside Management Services [UK] Ltd was commissioned to develop and deliver a programme of training for the new Greenstart leaders. The aim of the programme is to develop skills, knowledge and confidence to deliver activities (and to develop new activities) that involve pre-school children and their parents in use of the natural green space on their doorstep.
The training program has since been extended and repeated with new leaders.
